Goldman Sachs Chief David Solomon Calls Himself ‘Observer’ as He Reveals Small BTC Investment

Solomon disclosed his holdings Feb. 18 during a panel at the World Liberty Forum in Florida, telling attendees, “I own a little bitcoin, very little,” while cautioning that he is “not a great bitcoin prognosticator.” He framed himself as an observer still studying how the asset behaves.

The remarks mark a notable evolution. In July 2024, Solomon described bitcoin as a speculative investment without a clear use case, though he acknowledged it could function as a store of value. By January 2025, he pointed to regulatory barriers that limited Goldman’s ability to directly engage with crypto markets.

At the Florida forum, Solomon suggested the regulatory climate has shifted. He joked that rules had been “extremely prohibitive” until recently, crediting policy changes under President Donald Trump’s administration for creating more flexibility around digital assets.

Goldman itself has expanded its crypto footprint through exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tied to bitcoin, ethereum, and others. As of early 2026, the bank reported roughly $2.36 billion in crypto-related ETF exposure, though filings show it trimmed some positions in late 2025.

At the event, Solomon also highlighted tokenization as a development he considers significant for financial markets, signaling that blockchain-based infrastructure — rather than speculative trading alone — is drawing Wall Street’s attention.

For a CEO who once kept crypto at arm’s length, even “very little” ownership carries symbolic weight to some observers.
