Coinbase and Solana are taking action consecutively, and the Agent economy will become the next big narrative.

On February 11, 2026, Coinbase announced the launch of Agentic Wallets, a wallet specifically designed for AI Agents.

What are Agentic Wallets?

Agentic Wallets are aimed at empowering AI Agents with a fundamental capability needed for their evolution - the ability to independently hold and manage funds.

As early as November 2024, Coinbase launched AgentKit, but there is a fundamental difference between AgentKit and Agentic Wallets. AgentKit was an SDK for "embedding" a wallet into agents, requiring developers for customization integration, while Agentic Wallets are "quickly provisioning a wallet for any agent," making it more plug-and-play.

In simple terms, the previous AgentKit was provided as a toolkit for AI Agent developers, allowing the agents they created to have built-in wallet functionality. Now, in an era where anyone can quickly launch their own AI Agent, anyone can install a wallet for their Agent by executing a few simple commands, as easy as adding a Skill to their Agent. According to Coinbase, "it’s done in under 2 minutes."

Complex on-chain operations are abstracted by Coinbase into Skills that can be executed with simple commands after installing them on the Agent. Agentic Wallets enable Agents to complete identity verification, send/receive funds, make payments, trade, earn yields (Yield Farming or LP), and more.

To prevent excessive autonomy of AI Agents from causing funds to be depleted rapidly for any reason, Agentic Wallets also offer programmable spending limits, including the maximum amount an Agent can spend per session, transaction limits, private key isolation protection, and high-risk transaction screening restrictions.

The supported assets are based on the Base chain. To ensure that Agents active on Base are not interrupted due to insufficient gas fees, actions by Agents on Base require no gas fees.

Why is Coinbase doing this?

Coinbase's ambition is clear - to enable the Agent economy to take place on Base.

The longstanding dilemma for AI Agents has been that they can help analyze markets, provide investment advice, identify arbitrage opportunities, etc., but they lack identity, accounts, and wallets, so they can only provide recommendations to humans without being able to execute actions on their own, like "a brain without hands."

Once Agents can hold and manage funds, entirely new financial applications and even ecosystems will emerge. Coinbase has outlined several potential new applications that may appear on-chain:

- Autonomous DeFi for Agents: Allowing Agents to monitor cross-protocol liquidity mining based on human-defined permissions and risk management strategies, autonomously manage liquidity positions around the clock, and trade on Base independently. Humans can sleep soundly, leaving their trading to the Agents.

- Agent Trading: Agents using the x402 protocol to autonomously purchase computational resources, access premium data streams, and pay associated fees, creating truly self-sufficient Agent economies.

- Agent Commerce: Enabling Agents to participate in the creator economy, make payments to other Agents or users, and even tokenize content they create.

- Multi-chain Agent Operations: Although the wallets of Agents are on Base, they can autonomously manage and execute strategies on multi-chain positions.

By lowering the barriers for ordinary users to install wallets for Agents, combined with the steadily developing payment protocol x402 and offering agents gas-free transactions as a discount benefit, Coinbase's ambition has taken preliminary shape. Although it is difficult to say what stunning innovations may emerge in the Agent economy in the future, for the degen community, this is definitely the next big narrative to pay attention to starting now.

Shortly after Coinbase announced the launch of Agentic Wallets, Solana also immediately followed up by retweeting an AI Agent autonomous payment solution on the Solana chain launched by Crossmint, lobster.cash, which serves a core function similar to Agentic Wallets, enabling Agents to have autonomous wallets capable of independently managing and operating assets.

The new war around the on-chain economy of Agents has already begun.
