Gaming Platform Launches Feature to Unlock Utility for Legacy Sports NFTs

SCOR, the protocol focused on programmable sports IP, has unveiled a new feature aimed at reactivating tens of thousands of dormant sports non-fungible tokens. The feature, called cross-chain wallet linking for SCOR-ID, lets fans verify ownership of collectibles across blockchains and instantly unlock in-game benefits inside the SCOR ecosystem.

In a statement, SCOR said the new portal tackles fragmentation by allowing users to cryptographically link external wallets to their SCOR-ID, turning previously idle collectibles into meaningful gameplay boosts without requiring any asset transfers.

The cross-chain linking system updates a user’s SCOR-ID metadata by connecting their Base wallet to external wallets that hold sports NFTs. Through a secure verification flow, Sweet’s backend authenticates cryptographic signatures and automatically appends new traits to the SCOR-ID token, consolidating cross-chain ownership into a unified digital identity. Once verified, users can access their full inventory on the platform to unlock gameplay perks and earn multipliers without migrating assets or paying transfer fees.

“We see millions of dollars and tens of thousands of fans locked into collections that have lost value and have no current utility,” said Tom Mizzone, CEO at Sweet, SCOR Foundation’s Lab Co. “We’re turning isolated collections into a unified gaming identity without forcing holders to migrate assets. By securely linking their wallet history to their SCOR-ID, we can instantly recognize their sports fandom and reward it with tangible gameplay upgrades.”

The approach allows SCOR to recognize legacy assets — such as Los Angeles Lakers drops or Cristiano Ronaldo collectibles — without moving or duplicating the original NFTs. The assets remain securely in the user’s wallet while SCOR reads and indexes ownership data to grant in-game advantages such as gem multipliers and exclusive perks. These gems can later be converted into SCOR tokens at an accelerated rate.

SCOR already features more than 2,000 athletes across global sports, including cricketers Ben Stokes and Chris Gayle, golf legend Arnold Palmer, and several other stars across multiple disciplines.

A key design principle of the system is preserving the sovereignty of original collectibles. SCOR does not mint derivatives or copy artwork; instead, it verifies ownership and updates SCOR-ID metadata accordingly.

“This is about utility and identity,” said Raymond Lew, executive vice president of product at Sweet. “That CR7 or Lakers collectible is a badge of honor, but for many, the reality of ownership simply hasn’t lived up to the hype. By linking that wallet to their SCOR-ID, we turn that passive proof of fandom into an active functional key that finally rewards them.”

  • What does SCOR’s new feature do? It lets fans link wallets across multiple blockchains to activate dormant sports NFTs inside the SCOR ecosystem.
  • Why is cross‑chain linking important for collectors? It turns previously idle NFTs into usable in‑game perks without moving or transferring the original assets.
  • How does SCOR verify ownership across chains? Users connect external wallets, and SCOR securely updates SCOR‑ID metadata to reflect verified holdings.
  • What benefits do linked NFTs unlock? Verified assets provide gameplay boosts like gem multipliers and exclusive perks that enhance earning potential.
