Intensifying demands for streamlined digital access are prompting renewed scrutiny of outdated connectivity practices, especially as public venues face pressure to deliver frictionless network experiences. Coinbase (Nasdaq: COIN) CEO Brian Armstrong shared on social media platform X on Nov. 14 that legacy wifi conventions no longer align with current user expectations.
The Coinbase executive stated:
Wifi passwords should disappear everywhere (hotels, homes, airports, restaurants/coffee shops). We probably waste over 100m person hours a year collectively typing in wifi passwords. Your phone should just auto-connect wherever you are, like cell towers.
Armstrong presented these remarks while stressing the inefficiency of existing authentication norms. He also addressed the persistent use of promotional login screens, stating: “And no, none of those dumb captive portals either (ads) – businesses should be shamed for using these.” His comments reflected an industrywide shift toward cost-effective, always-on network access that mirrors essential utilities.
He further remarked: “Hotels don’t charge you for electricity when you charge your phone – it’s too cheap to meter. Wifi is now the same.” These statements demonstrated his position that bandwidth management strategies should evolve alongside falling infrastructure costs.

Armstrong continued by pointing to broader operational considerations for retail and hospitality operators, noting that restrictive digital access policies often stem from outdated assumptions about resource scarcity. He asserted:
Stop treating wifi like some scarce resource that needs to be rationed. If people are treating your coffee shop like an office, and not buying anything, there must be some other solution.
His perspective suggested that businesses could adopt alternative approaches to manage customer behavior without imposing technological friction. As device ecosystems expand and usage patterns evolve, the wider market may witness increased momentum toward automated, password-free network frameworks that reduce overhead and simplify user experiences.
