Say goodbye to AMC and GME as American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) has skyrocketed thanks to a campaign featuring the actress Sydney Sweeney. The campaign ads have generated significant buzz and optimism among investors and retail traders.

The campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” highlights a fall denim collection including special items like a limited-edition denim jacket and “The Sydney Jean.” The campaign aims to rejuvenate sales after a period of sluggish consumer spending and challenges like tariff uncertainties.
Many traders on Wall Street Bets have been comparing AEO’s momentum to previous meme-stock rallies like those seen with Gamestop and AMC, suggesting that part of the price jump is driven more by speculative enthusiasm than by fundamental company performance alone.
In a note shared with Bitcoin.com News, Tom Bruni, Editor-in-Chief at Stocktwits said, “Generally, we’re seeing an exponential increase in activity in AEO.” Bruni noted that the AEO daily symbol page views [are] up 100x from their 3-month average (and growing), AEO daily message volume is up 60x from their 3-month average (and growing) too.
Bruni also noted that the number of AEO watchers on Stocktwits has already grown 10% in the last two days to 5,831. Over the last 24 hours, even mainstream media outlets have been referring to AEO as a “meme stock.” Before this rally, AEO stock had been under pressure.
American Eagle Outfitters dealt with revenue declines, withdrawn forecasts, and wider macroeconomic concerns weighing on the company. Despite those challenges, the combination of Sweeney’s celebrity influence and social media-driven hype appears to have sparked a notable rebound in AEO’s shares, driving gains.
The recent upswing suggests that meme culture remains a potent force in today’s markets, blurring the lines between celebrity, consumerism, and stock valuation. When attention becomes currency, the right face at the right time can spark unexpected market movement, and Sweeney has surely done that.
