"Extremely regrettable" - Users discover that Ledger is phasing out the "veteran" Nano S.

Users on social media expressed disappointment after major hardware wallet provider Ledger announced last month that it would be discontinuing support for the Nano S.

Ledger stated in its spring update on May 30 that the company is gradually phasing out support for the Ledger Nano S, meaning it will no longer accept new app submissions, feature requests, or app updates. Another notice urging users to switch to new devices was released in April.

Launched in 2016, the Nano S means that some devices are nearing a decade of use.

The wallet provider also encouraged users to confirm that they have saved their 24-word secret recovery phrase to maintain support.

While Ledger's spring announcement was made last month, many users on social media seem to have only just become aware of the news, with comments oscillating between anger, disappointment, and a resigned acceptance of the reality that other tech companies often phase out old products.

A user working in the Ethereum ecosystem, Pcaversaccio, pointed out on June 25 that Ledger "is essentially forcing users to buy and input their seed into new devices," which is "very unscrupulous."

Pcaversaccio stated, "I understand you are a business, but please do not toy with backward compatibility; many people rely on LNS. You are one of the few trusted parties, and now you are starting to review new features and access for commercial reasons."

In its April notice, Ledger explained that since the launch of the Nano S in 2016, there have been significant changes in the cryptocurrency space, and its "limited storage capacity has now become a limiting factor," making it "unable to support most new use cases."

X user and Pudgy Penguins security project manager Beau stated on June 25 that this transition is a "deeply regrettable" and disappointing decision.

Beau reminded, "If you are currently using a Nano S, make sure you have backed up your seed phrase and transfer assets to a new wallet if necessary. Don't find out your device is damaged after updates stop."

Another user, Juan from the Nillion ecosystem, questioned, "Is Ledger just trying to abandon users' existing devices and force them to buy new ones? Am I understanding this correctly? What is going on?"

Some users inquired whether the Ledger Nano S could still be used or if there are security risks in using the device without ongoing support.

Beau pointed out, "It may still function normally, but the device will no longer receive updates, which means the likelihood of malfunctions or security issues will increase."

According to Ledger, if users do not upgrade from the Nano S, they will not have access to the latest security features, compatibility support, and blockchain updates.

Currently considered a fugitive by the U.S. government, Tornado Cash developer Roman Semenov (who has been charged for his involvement in the Tornado Cash project) claimed that he has not updated his Ledger device for years.

"I stopped updating my Ledger device years ago when they started rolling out cloud backup firmware features. In fact, it works fine without any updates," he said.

Ledger has not yet responded to Cointelegraph's request for comment.
