OpenAI plans to develop AI "companion" devices that integrate artificial intelligence capabilities into daily life, potentially opening the door to a new high-tech innovation that could be used alongside laptops and smartphones.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that he is collaborating with designer Jony Ive to develop these secret devices aimed at the mass market, with plans to launch 100 million devices at the time of the product release.
According to a May 21 report by The Wall Street Journal, Ive officially joined the OpenAI team after Altman's company acquired Ive's startup for $6.5 billion.
Currently, neither Altman nor Ive has disclosed the specific appearance or functionality of these companion devices. Ive only described it as a "new design movement," similar to Apple's deeply integrated ecosystem of hardware and software.
OpenAI has successfully raised billions of dollars from investors who view the company as a cornerstone of the AI industry, especially after the unprecedented success of its ChatGPT large language model (LLM). According to industry statistics, as of May, the weekly active user count for ChatGPT has approached 800 million.
This remarkable user growth trend has propelled OpenAI to a milestone valuation of $157 billion by October 2024—almost doubling to $300 billion by March 2025.
According to an April 15 report by The Verge, in addition to its secret companion devices, OpenAI's ambitions extend into the social media realm, as the company plans to compete with Elon Musk's X and Mark Zuckerberg's Meta platform.
Reports indicate that this new social media platform will combine ChatGPT's image generation capabilities with a social media feed similar to X. It is currently unclear whether this new social media platform will be launched as a standalone product or integrated into ChatGPT.
The fusion of AI and social media has also permeated the blockchain industry, with several startups leveraging these technologies to build AI agents, LLM tools, and decentralized social media networks.
As Cointelegraph reported, Validation Cloud recently deployed an LLM on the Hedera network, enabling decentralized finance users to more conveniently query blockchain data.
