Summer Mersinger, one of the four commissioners currently serving at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will become the next CEO of the digital asset advocacy organization Blockchain Association (BA).

According to an announcement from the Blockchain Association on May 14, current CEO Kristin Smith will step down for Mersinger on May 16, during which time an interim leader will head the organization until the CFTC commissioner officially takes office on June 2. Although her term at the CFTC is expected to last until April 2028, the association stated that Mersinger is set to leave the agency on May 30.

Mersinger has held one of the Republican seats at the CFTC since 2022, and her departure paves the way for President Trump to nominate another member to the financial regulatory agency. Regulations stipulate that no more than three commissioners can belong to the same political party.

Like the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the CFTC is one of the key financial regulatory agencies in the U.S., and its policies impact digital assets. Currently, lawmakers in Congress are working to pass a market structure bill to clarify the roles that various agencies may play in overseeing and regulating cryptocurrencies.
