The joint operation, codenamed Op Letrik, targeted two premises—one in Bukit Perpat, Hulu Terengganu, and another in Wakar Tapai, Marang—where authorities confiscated mining equipment and related devices, according to a Malay Mail report citing Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin.

Malay Mail details that the raids were conducted with TNB’s Special Engagement Against Losses (SEAL) unit to curb revenue losses linked to power theft. Investigators said the syndicate operated from residential and commercial properties, illegally tapping electricity to avoid detection while running round-the-clock mining activities.
The stolen power reportedly costs TNB approximately RM36,000 monthly, exacerbating non-technical losses for the utility provider. Malay Mail reports that no arrests were made during the operation, but all seized items, including wiring tools and modified meters, were taken to the district police headquarters for analysis. Authorities are tracing the premises’ owners and syndicate members, Mohd Khairi confirmed.
The case is being investigated under Sections 379 (theft) and 427 (mischief) of the Penal Code, alongside Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990. Convictions could result in up to five years’ imprisonment, fines exceeding RM100,000, or both.
Mohd Khairi urged the public to report suspicious activity, emphasizing that electricity theft jeopardizes public safety and infrastructure. TNB has intensified audits to identify further breaches, signaling tighter oversight of high-power consumption sites.
