Personal Introduction to Mobile and Internet Environment Choices in China

To begin with, this article is merely my personal suggestions combined with discussions from many friends within China. It should not be considered a necessity. Being called for tea or having your water meter checked is just a matter of probability; there is no 100% certainty about what will happen. The more developed the city, the lower the probability of being investigated, but low does not mean zero probability.

First, regarding mobile phone choices, in my limited experience with Android, there have always been issues like unauthorized downloads, excessive permissions, and background information recording. Of course, this is just my experience in the country, and Apple, being a closed system, is relatively more secure.

Secondly, I have used the domestic version of the iPhone for many years without any issues, but using the overseas version is still my personal habit. The Hong Kong version is probably the easiest for everyone to obtain, and the price is relatively the lowest. Moreover, it is mainly for eSIM purposes, as physical SIM cards in most regions require KYC, and the few that do not are either expensive or have insufficient data.

Since there are indeed some eSIMs that do not require KYC, I won't elaborate on them; there are many available online, and even in the cryptocurrency field, there are decentralized eSIMs that are very useful, which I personally use. It’s best to find some that come with a phone number and can receive SMS, as this can be helpful when registering on certain platforms, but whether you need it depends on personal preference.

As for the topic of VPNs, I don't want to be overly dramatic; whether it's illegal or not doesn't matter much to me, but I do suggest that using eSIMs to avoid VPNs is the best choice.

Currently, my personal setup is:

iPhone + Hong Kong and Singapore dual SIM (both require KYC) + VPN (used for participating in certain activities)
