[U.S. Tech Companies Cut 140,000 Jobs This Year, AI Development as the Main Driver] According to a report by Jinse Finance on July 27, AI is impacting job numbers. As reported by the Financial Times, since the beginning of this year, U.S. tech companies have cut nearly 140,000 jobs. Among them, Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft collectively reduced approximately 50,000 positions. While announcing layoffs, these companies have simultaneously invested hundreds of billions of dollars into building AI data centers. The most recent company to announce layoffs is the work management software company Monday.com. In a filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last week, the company stated it would cut about 20% of its workforce (over 600 employees) as part of its "restructuring plan" to support the "ongoing transformation of product, marketing, and go-to-market strategies," aiming for a leaner and more focused operational model while investing in an "AI-driven growth strategy." Other major tech companies that have recently announced layoffs include: Microsoft, which announced earlier this month that it would cut approximately 4,800 positions, mostly from its Xbox division; Oracle, which revealed last month that it had reduced 21,000 employees over the past year; and GitLab, which cut about 350 employees last month. The reasons for layoffs at these companies are all related to AI. However, other tech companies are actively hiring. For instance, Anthropic and OpenAI are recruiting talent affected by layoffs. Some companies that have announced layoffs are reallocating personnel rather than outright eliminating positions. For example, Meta recently laid off 8,000 employees while reallocating approximately 7,000 to AI-related roles. Similarly, IBM, during its layoffs, announced that foundational positions in AI and hybrid cloud fields would double.
