[Mirae Asset Acquires Majority Stake in Korbit for Approximately $102 Million, Renames It Digital X]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Mirae Asset Consulting has gained majority control of South Korea's first cryptocurrency exchange, Korbit, increasing its stake to 97.15%. The total transaction value is approximately 141.4 billion KRW, equivalent to around $95 million to $102 million based on exchange rates.
The Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the transaction on July 9, 2026, stating that the acquisition is unlikely to restrict competition and noting that Korbit held about a 0.5% market share in South Korea's crypto trading market in 2025. Mirae Asset stated that Korbit's operating entity, user deposits, and core trading services will remain unchanged for the time being, and customer assets will continue to be safeguarded under existing protection rules.
Korbit will be renamed Digital X. Mirae Asset founder and Global Strategy Officer Park Hyeon-joo stated that Digital X is a core component of Mirae Asset's 3.0 strategy, with plans to connect tokenization of real-world assets, security token offerings, stablecoins, traditional securities, and digital assets on a single platform.
Mirae Asset emphasized that Digital X does not aim to surpass Upbit or Bithumb in trading volume but is positioned as an infrastructure platform, combining its expertise in securities and asset management with Korbit's digital asset operations. Digital X will initially operate based on Korbit's existing licenses and user base.
