According to a report by Jinse Finance, on July 24, 25 U.S. tech companies, including IBM (IBM.N), Meta Platforms (META.O), NVIDIA (NVDA.O), and Microsoft (MSFT.O), jointly signed an open letter advocating for open-weight AI models. The letter emphasized that open-weight models are crucial for a healthy AI ecosystem. The United States faces a choice regarding open weights in the field of artificial intelligence. Admittedly, open-weight models do pose real and unique risks. However, in reality, openness may be one of the most important paths to achieving AI safety and security. Solely relying on closed models is not inherently safe: they can be breached, misused, or fail in ways that are undetectable externally. Open-weight models, on the other hand, allow a broader community of researchers and developers to examine their behavior, identify vulnerabilities, develop safeguards, and continuously improve them over time.
