Tron (1982) was ruled ineligible for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects because the Academy considered its use of computer-generated imagery to be “cheating.” The irony is that Tron (1982) wasn’t even fully computer-generated. Its groundbreaking visuals were created through a mix of hand-drawn animation, rotoscoping, miniature photography, backlit film, and early computer graphics.
