[Orbital Data Center Company Starcloud Announces Bitcoin Mining in Space This Year]
Deep Tide TechFlow reports, on March 9, according to Cointelegraph, the orbital data center startup Starcloud, supported by Nvidia, announced that it will begin mining Bitcoin in space later this year during the launch of its second spacecraft, potentially becoming the first company to mine outside Earth. Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston stated that operating Bitcoin-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners in space will be "one of the most compelling use cases for space computing," as its costs are significantly lower than GPUs. He noted that, on a per-kilowatt-hour basis, the cost of GPUs is approximately 30 times that of ASICs. A 1-kilowatt B200 chip might cost $30,000, whereas a 1-kilowatt ASIC costs only about $1,000. Johnston believes that space-based Bitcoin mining will become a "massive industry," as mining on Earth is "meaningless," and eventually all mining activities will be conducted in space. Starcloud's data center consists of approximately 88,000 satellites, primarily powered by solar energy. The company was founded in early 2024 and had already launched satellites equipped with NVIDIA H100 into orbit last November.
