Trump plans to take over Greenland from Denmark because of its rich resources, supposedly worth trillions. He wants to buy it for $16 billion. And his grand ambition is to take over Canada. Right now, European countries have symbolically sent a few troops to Greenland. The most sent were just over a dozen—yes, a dozen, not thousands. Some, like the UK, only sent one person. It’s mainly symbolic, opposing U.S. hegemony. Trump is now planning to impose tariffs on these countries, so anyone who disagrees with his forced purchase of Greenland will face tariffs. Denmark is currently selling off U.S. debt and saying that the U.S. is unreliable. The market speculates that other European countries might follow suit and sell off U.S. assets, which is why U.S. stocks and dollar-related assets are dropping. For example, Bitcoin is now behaving exactly like a U.S. tech stock, highly correlated with the Nasdaq. If a wave of de-dollarization really kicks off, there aren’t many places to park funds. Gold is one option, but where else? The key now is to watch Europe’s stance. Historically, they don’t easily fall out with the U.S., but if the U.S. market takes a big hit, Trump might back down. It’s really hard to predict.
