[Two Hong Kong youths sentenced to detention center over 2 million USDT scam]
According to Ming Pao, in November last year, a man was defrauded of HK$2 million in cash while trading Tether (USDT) at a currency exchange shop in Tsim Sha Tsui. Two 18-year-old youths attempted to transfer the cash using a passage inside the shop's safe but failed to escape and were eventually arrested. The two admitted to charges of fraud and were sentenced to a detention center today (December 19) by the Hong Kong District Court.
The judge noted that while the two defendants were not the masterminds, they played key roles in the scam. Considering their age and potential for rehabilitation, sentencing them to a detention center would help with reform and benefit society.
The case revealed that after the victim handed over the cash to the two defendants, he did not receive the Tether as promised. Upon returning to the shop, he discovered the money had been moved, and the two defendants had unsuccessfully attempted to escape through a passage. The judge emphasized the premeditated nature of the case and the significant amount involved, urging the public to remain vigilant and guard against similar scams.
