[Approximately $9 Trillion of U.S. Debt to Mature in 2026] According to a report by Jinse Finance, approximately $9 trillion of U.S. government debt will mature in 2026. This debt primarily stems from the large issuance of five-year Treasury bonds during the pandemic in 2021. The Treasury bonds issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury in 2021 had interest rates as low as 0.8%, but by 2026, these bonds will be rolled over at an interest rate of approximately 4.0%. This means the interest cost of these bonds will quadruple instantly. As a result, it is expected that in 2026, the interest cost of U.S. Treasury debt will exceed $1 trillion for the first time. To maintain normal government operations, the U.S. Department of the Treasury will need to issue nearly $11 trillion in Treasury bonds in 2026, including $1.7 trillion in new funds to cover the deficit and $9.3 trillion to roll over maturing debt and cover additional interest costs.
