PayPal officially reported its Q2 2026 results, and the published documents revealed a serious imbalance as cryptocurrency investments brought the payments giant an $81 million net loss, while its core payment services delivered strong growth and beat Wall Street's pessimistic forecasts.
Over the three-month period, PayPal recorded an $81 million paper loss from its strategic investments and crypto assets held. The trend has now continued for six months, as the company lost another $74 million in the same segment during the first quarter.

These swings cut GAAP net income to $1.104 billion, reducing earnings by $0.07 per share. Management, however, is asking investors not to panic: the crypto portfolio is fully isolated and does not affect the company's current operating expenses.

How PayPal leverages stablecoins and Venmo to defy market slump
While crypto moved into the red, PayPal's core payment services delivered a powerful surge and exceeded all market expectations:
- Revenue: $8.68 billion, compared with the market forecast of $8.46 billion.
- Adjusted earnings per share: $1.38 versus the expected $1.27.
- Total payment volume: $486.45 billion.
Venmo became the main driver of this growth. The service accounted for $93.81 billion of the total transaction volume, proving that the strategy of developing debit cards within the app has fully paid off.

The PYUSD stablecoin is also continuing to expand. It has already been rolled out across 70 countries and has attracted users with a 4% yield on balances. Following the strong quarter, PayPal remains optimistic about the future and raised its full-year earnings forecast to $5.38 per share while keeping its capital expenditure plan at $1 billion.
These results could not have arrived at a better time. The market is actively discussing rumors that Stripe is preparing to acquire PayPal for $53 billion. The Q2 2026 financial report shows that the strong operating performance of PayPal's core payment business allows the company to maintain stability despite short-term losses in the cryptocurrency segment.
