Amid November’s Market Carnage, Long-Sleeping Wallets Moved 2,443 BTC

It wasn’t exactly a victory lap for bitcoin holders as the asset shed a hefty chunk of value over November’s 30-day stretch. Even so, that didn’t stop old coins from crawling out of the woodwork after years of silence. And while a 50 BTC coinbase reward moved in December, not a single coin from 2009 or 2010 budged last month.

Metrics from btcparser.com show that 63 long-silent addresses moved their coins for the first time since they were acquired. In total, 2,443.25005 dormant BTC sprang loose — equal to about $225.6 million based on Dec. 4 exchange rates. And even though these old coins resurfaced during a choppy and decidedly less cheerful November, the pace of dormant activity has clearly cooled as prices drift lower.

Onchain data shows that wallets born in 2011 logged three spends totaling 26.98 BTC. And while “spent” is the proper term, it doesn’t automatically mean those coins were sold or transferred to someone else. Wallets created in 2012 also recorded three moves, adding up to 85.02 BTC in activity. Addresses from 2013 picked up the pace with 12 spends, unleashing 316.94 BTC for the first time since they were originally hoarded.

Wallets created in 2014 and 2015 were quieter by comparison, with seven 2014 addresses shifting 169.819 BTC and six from 2015 moving 91.42105 BTC. As mentioned above, wallets from 2016 did the heavy lifting in November’s tally, with 17 separate addresses moving a hefty 1,570.12 BTC. Some of the 2016 action came in hefty chunks, with transfers clocking in at 217.38 BTC, 216 BTC, 103 BTC, and even a 500 BTC move.

Dormant bitcoin tied to 2017 wallets tallied 15 transfers in all, but only 182.95 BTC moved during the 30-day stretch. Beyond 2016’s clear lead, 2013 ranked as the second most active year for sleeping bitcoin spends in November, with 2017 trailing in third. In all, November’s price slump didn’t stop vintage bitcoin from stretching its legs, and while 2016 wallets dominated the action, the broader revival offered a rare peek at long-held stashes quietly shifting after years of stillness.
