Trump's Money Printing? A Repeat of the 2021 Money Printing Scenario? Can Trump Distribute Money?
On November 9th, 2021, at 19:25 Beijing time, Trump announced plans to distribute at least $2,000 to each citizen outside of the high-income bracket.
This is mainly because Trump's tariff policy may be rejected by the Supreme Court, so he might want to counteract through public opinion. Although this is quite encouraging, to be honest, the president cannot directly distribute money to the public. It must go through congressional legislation, meaning it requires approval from both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The massive money printing in 2021 was passed by Congress, but now there isn't even a resolution to the government shutdown, let alone any money printing. Moreover, Trump's tariffs are currently under review by the Supreme Court, and the chances of approval are very low.
If the tariffs are deemed illegal, then the collected taxes would need to be refunded. At that point, not only would distributing money be impossible, but it would also exacerbate the already fragile U.S. finances.
